Welcome to Herptileworld

My name is Bruce Maclean and this is my home site. It is designed to provide information about the two related services which I run:

Update 20/09/14: I am looking to restart services soon (within a couple of months) - watch this space!

(DATE  08 Feb 2014): I have recently been diagnosed with lymphoma, and have therefore taken the decision to close these services for the next few months whilst undergoing treatment, in order to fight this (any updates below). So:

THESE SERVICES ARE CLOSED at least in the short term (INFORMATION SHEETS STILL AVAILABLE ON THIS WEBSITE).

If you require veterinary attention for your pet I'm afraid you will have to go elsewhere. Depending on where you are, the closest practices I know of that have dedicated exotic vets/units are Great Western Exotics in Swindon, Anton vets in Andover or C J Hall vets in west London.

If you specifically need to contact me with any outstanding administration issues please use email and I will try to deal with them when I can, although collection and reply will probably be very erratic. Clinical emails are not advised - it is always best to actually see a veterinary surgeon with your pet, and I cannot guarantee a prompt response.

I do apologise for this, but circumstances have forced this decision on me.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my former clients and wish you and your pet(s) all the best for the future.

Update 01/05/14: I am making some progress and treatment is continuing. Unfortunately still no time frame for possible resumption of service.

Update 01/06/14: Good progress but treatment still on-going.

Update 01/07/14:  Currently on a break in treatment, with initial chemotherapy finished but a course of radiotherapy to come.

Update 01/08/14:  I am currently in the middle of a round of radiotherapy. I hope to be in complete remission after this and look forward to resuming service as soon as I can.

Update 20/09/14: I am looking to restart services soon (within a couple of months) - watch this space!

About me

As you will have read, my name is Bruce Maclean. I am a qualified British Veterinary Surgeon (BSc(Vet Sci), B V M & S, MRCVS if you want the lot!), having graduated in 1992 from Edinburgh University. My background in exotic animals comes from a lifelong interest, including over 30 years experience in keeping and breeding a variety of reptiles and amphibians - my current pets are mainly rescues/rehomes, and include 31 assorted newts and salamanders, 2 frogs which stowed away in somebody's luggage from Burma, a small group of terrestrial caecilians, a group of 8 herman's tortoises, a pair of box tortoises, a royal python, and a leopard gecko. We also have 30 + adult seahorses of 5 different species, assorted other marine fish, koi and goldfish in an outdoor pond shared with wildlife, and a cat!

Following graduation, I also spent a period at the University of Utrecht in Holland, further studying the veterinary care of birds and exotic animals. After a short period in mixed veterinary practice, I have spent the last 16 years working as a full-time bird/exotic animal veterinary surgeon. Working solely and full-time with exotic animals, I am able to devote my full attention to keeping up with advances in husbandry and veterinary care of these species.

I have contributed chapters to some veterinary textbooks, as well as publishing several papers on veterinary care of these animals.

I am a member of many professional societies, including British Veterinary Zoological Society, Fish Veterinary Society, Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians,  European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians, World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association, International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine, as well as many more general societies devoted to the care of these animals, including the Tortoise Trust, British Chelonia Group, British Herpetological Society and British Tarantula Society.

I have a special interest in amphibian and invertebrate medicine, and offer free consultations for them!
